A simple idea is turning into a citywide movement—one painted rock at a time.
A Creative Way to Connect
Launched by the Statesboro Regional Art Association, the “Kindness Rock Movement” encourages people to decorate small rocks and place them throughout downtown for others to discover.
The goal is simple: create small, meaningful moments of happiness—whether someone finds a colorful design, an encouraging message, or a piece of art tucked along a sidewalk.
Participants can take a rock, leave it, or create their own to keep the movement going.
Turning Art Into Everyday Moments
Organizers say the project is about more than art—it’s about connection.
“This is a simple but meaningful way to bring art into everyday life,” said association president Sally Minton. “We hope it inspires both children and adults to slow down, explore downtown, and share a little kindness with others.”
With support from the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority and the city itself, the initiative is designed to be accessible, family-friendly, and easy to join.
A Community Effort from the Start
The movement is already drawing involvement from across the community.
Local partners, including GreenRock Recycling, provided materials, while youth from the Averitt Center for the Arts helped decorate the first batch of rocks placed around town.
To kick things off, a public painting event is scheduled at West Main Gallery, giving residents a chance to create their own designs and take part from day one.
Keeping It Safe and Sustainable
Organizers are also encouraging participants to be thoughtful about where rocks are placed—avoiding busy walkways, businesses without permission, and environmentally sensitive areas.
The idea is to keep the experience fun, safe, and respectful for everyone.
Small Surprises, Lasting Impact
At its core, the Kindness Rock Movement is about something simple:
A small act. A shared space. A moment that makes someone smile.
