One Hug at a Time: A Mission to Spread Kindness

In a world where many people pass each other without a second glance, one young man is choosing a different approach—one hug at a time.

From Quiet to Connection

In Newcastle, a coastal town southeast of Belfast, Niall Donnan didn’t always see himself as someone who would stop strangers on the street.

He describes himself as once being introverted, someone who avoided interaction. But over time, he began stepping outside his comfort zone—and discovered something powerful.

People want connection.

That realization sparked a mission.

A Simple Sign, A Big Impact

Donnan began standing in public places holding a simple message: “If you need a hug… hug me.”

At first, reactions were mixed. Some people were unsure, even skeptical.

But more often than not, hesitation turned into appreciation.

“Deep down everyone just wants love and positivity,” Donnan says—and his experiences seem to support that belief.

More Than Just Hugs

While the hugs may be what draw attention, his efforts go far beyond that.

From charity walks to online fundraising, Donnan has used his platform to help others in tangible ways—including raising thousands to help someone experiencing homelessness find housing and employment.

For him, the most valuable thing he offers isn’t money.

It’s time.

Kindness Without Borders

What started in Northern Ireland has expanded across Europe, with Donnan traveling and connecting with people from all walks of life.

Despite cultural differences, he says the response is largely the same.

People may be surprised at first—but kindness translates everywhere.

Choosing Generosity Every Day

Whether it’s giving away fuel money, organizing fundraisers, or simply offering a hug, Donnan approaches life with a clear mindset:

If he has something to give, he gives it.

Even if it’s just a moment.

A Different Way to Live

His approach may not be conventional—but it’s intentional.

In a fast-moving world, where connection can feel fleeting, his message is simple:

Slow down. Show up. Be kind.

Because sometimes, the smallest gesture—a hug, a conversation, a few minutes of your time—can mean more than anything else.
