Common Sense: When Politics Matters More Than Human Life

Supposedly, Democrats are in the midst of a struggle between its progressive base and its more moderate-centrists who we are told are dominant when it comes to holding elective office.  Watching their collective reaction to the brutal assassination of Charlie Kirk, one is tempted to ask:  Where are these moderate Democrats you speak of?

First, a quick look at who these people are, then why the behavior is utterly disgusting and unwise.  The “both sides do it” argument falls on its face based on fact.  For too many years, the Unholy Trinity—academia, corporate legacy media, and the world of entertainment has embraced progressive dogma, while working to silence and crush dissent.

Let us take a look at some examples.  During the most recent State-of-the-Union speech, delivered to a Joint Session of Congress, Democrats refused to acknowledge, much less applaud, an African American youth suffering from cancer.  They outdid themselves in the immediate aftermath of the Kirk killing.  When House Speaker Johnson called for a moment of silence, the Democrats loudly said no.  Of course, these are the same people who argued after the 2024 election that it was fine and dandy to cut off your family if they held different political views.  I have no recollection of this being okay after the 2020 election.

When it comes to political violence, a recent survey revealed that 25 percent of self-described very liberals agreed it is sometimes justified to resort to violence to achieve political goals.  Among other liberals, it was 17 percent.  Together, this is 42 percent.  At the same time, only six percent of conservatives agreed that political violence was okay.  That is a 700 percent difference!

I ask the question again:  Where are these moderate Democrats you speak of?

Anyone who disputes these facts should be willing, as Charlie Kirk would say, to “prove me wrong.”  Oh, and telling me, Nicole (we must protect our precious airwaves), Wallace said something different does not impress me until she can show me some facts, which she cannot.

Now we move along to the disgusting aspect of what the left is doing.  In the aftermath of the shooting, multiple individuals, including several in the media, posited the idea that the shooter was a disenchanted MAGA member.  After all, his parents were Republicans.

Some were parroting this thought long after it became abundantly clear the killer was a progressive who had been radicalized.  The engravings on the bullets, his writings, and other information all confirmed he was anything other than a conservative.  Still, as late as Sunday, no less than supposed center-left, Heather Cox Richardson, a Boston College history professor, said: “In fact, the alleged killer was not someone on the left.”  Instead, it was someone “who appears to have embraced the far right, disliking Kirk for being insufficiently radical.”  This sort of nonsense would not mean so much, save for the fact that Richardson has more than 2.6 million subscribers to her Substack newsletter, the most of anyone on the platform.

Most progressives made a quick pivot.  The “this shows how evil MAGA is” was transitioned to what I call the “yes, but” group.  They can condemn political violence in general, but understand how this came about as a result of the hateful language coming from the right.  This comes from folks who have spent more than a decade calling President Trump and his followers fascist, authoritarian, and Hitler.  Who can forget when Hillary Clinton in 2016 said “at least one third” of those supporting Trump were “deplorable?”  This group is the rationalizers.  I am now supposed to believe hate speech from the right caused the tragedy?  Give me a break.

The most disgusting group is the one celebrating the killing.  Never before have professionals in the media, teachers, administrators, airline pilots, or even doctors celebrated an assassination of any American public figure such as this.  Their despicable behavior is easily shown by doing nothing more than a quick Google search.  There is nothing that has been done by conservative professionals in these numbers that even remotely approximates what these people have done.  Yes, all of these individuals are free to express their opinions.  That does not mean they are free from the consequences for doing so.  Hyperbole?  Once more, “prove me wrong.”

Finally, what progressives have been doing is unwise politics. Outside the sizeable echo chamber where these folks live, all it does is enrage those on the right and give the rest of the folks an uneasy feeling.  To advance the progressive agenda, would it not have been smarter to remain silent than to provide clear and convincing evidence of what they really think?  Teachers could go on indoctrinating our children. The corporate legacy could continue to propagate nothing less than Democratic National Committee (DNC) talking points.  Hollywood could more easily continue down the path of trashing our history and culture.  As it is, they have smoked themselves out.  Those who are not part of the progressive movement roll their eyes and ask: What is wrong with these people?

Common Sense: The death of Charlie Kirk has resulted in progressives inside and outside government loudly proclaiming that their political views are more important than human life itself.  For many of us, we ask our progressive friends, just what is a bridge too far?
