The Jetsons Meet San Bruno

Only in California could a traffic stop look like a deleted scene from The Jetsons. Police in San Bruno spotted a Waymo robotaxi making a bold illegal U-turn during a DUI checkpoint. Sirens blared, lights flashed, and officers pulled it over—only to find the driver’s seat empty. No nervous teen fumbling for a license. No Uber driver insisting he was “just following GPS.” Just a smug, empty seat and a car that looked pretty proud of dodging car insurance.

No Driver, No Ticket

The officers leaned in, looked around, and quickly realized they couldn’t write a ticket. Why? Because their citation books don’t come with a box labeled “Robot.” Imagine filling that one out:

  • Violator’s Name: Siri’s weird cousin
  • Address: The Cloud
  • Court Date: Pending software update

San Bruno PD posted about it on social media, joking “no driver, no hands, no clue.” The internet loved it. Facebook commenters demanded Waymo should pay fines, while others just wanted to know how on earth police got it to pull over. Did the robot recognize flashing lights—or did it think it was getting an escort to Taco Bell?

The Legal Loophole

Here’s the catch: California law doesn’t currently allow police to ticket a driverless car for moving violations. They can slap parking tickets on windshields, but when a robotaxi treats traffic laws as “guidelines,” there’s no human to cite. Starting next year, a new law will let officers report violations to the DMV. That means clerks will soon moonlight as traffic cops and tech support. Expect forms that read:

  • Reason for violation: Software glitch
  • Recommended penalty: Download patch 3.7.1

Waymo’s Polished Response

Waymo quickly issued a statement about “learning experiences” and “commitment to road safety.” Translation: Please don’t ban us—we promise the bugs will be fixed eventually. The company already operates in Phoenix, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Now San Bruno joins the list, with an asterisk: Vehicle occasionally forgets traffic laws.

Accountability in the Cloud

This incident highlights a glaring problem: when technology makes mistakes, who pays the price? If a human runs a stop sign, they get a ticket. If a robotaxi does, responsibility floats in a cloud server. Alphabet, Waymo’s parent company, hides behind corporate statements while its cars rack up “oopsies.”

If one of these cars causes an accident, who’s at fault? The engineer? The executive? Or do we just slap a sticky note on the bumper and wait for customer service to call back?

Common Sense Still Matters

The truth is, accountability can’t vanish just because the driver’s seat is empty. A person can blush, apologize, or admit a mistake. A robot can’t. It just stares with that creepy “loading” face and waits for reprogramming.

So bless California’s heart for trying, but this saga proves technology can’t replace common sense. The cars may not need drivers, but the system still needs responsibility. Until lawmakers catch up, if you see a Waymo making a U-turn, let it go. You can’t ticket it, but you can say a prayer for whoever’s stuck at headquarters filling out the next patch update.
