A Routine Field Trip Turns Terrifying
A school outing in Bella Coola, British Columbia, turned into a chaotic, life-threatening ordeal when a grizzly bear suddenly charged a group of fourth- and fifth-grade students and their teachers on Thursday. The group had paused along a trail when, according to British Columbia Conservation Officer Service Inspector Kevin Van Damme, the bear emerged from the forest without warning and launched an attack.
Quick-Thinking Teachers Fight Back
In a moment that could have ended far worse, the teachers acted immediately—using pepper spray and a bear banger to drive the grizzly away. Their swift actions stopped the attack and likely saved lives. British Columbia’s environment minister, Tamara Davidson, later called the educators “true heroes,” noting their preparedness and ability to respond under extreme pressure.
Multiple Injuries, Two in Critical Condition
Eleven people were injured, including several students. Authorities report two victims are in critical condition, two are in serious condition, and seven were treated at the scene. All of the injured were initially taken to Bella Coola Hospital; several were later transferred to Vancouver for advanced care.
Search for the Bear Continues
Officials believe the grizzly may have been previously injured, contributing to its sudden aggression. Conservation officers, in collaboration with the Nuxalk Nation, are continuing efforts to locate the animal and ensure community safety. Van Damme acknowledged the emotional toll on residents and expressed deep concern for the victims and their families, wishing them a full recovery.
This frightening encounter underscores both the unpredictability of wildlife and the extraordinary courage displayed by educators who protected their students when it mattered most.
