Parachuter Crash Delays Virginia Tech Spring Game, But Avoids Serious Injury

A dramatic pregame moment at Virginia Tech turned tense—but ultimately ended in relief—after a parachuter collided with a scoreboard just before kickoff.

A Sudden Mid-Air Emergency

At Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, a parachuter carrying an American flag was descending ahead of the Hokies’ spring game when high winds disrupted the landing.

Video shows the skydiver veering off course and striking the top of the north end zone scoreboard instead of reaching the field. The parachuter had been part of a tandem jump, but misaligned during the final approach due to the conditions.

Quick Response on the Ground

Emergency crews moved quickly, using a crane to safely bring the parachuter down from the structure. The incident delayed the start of the spring scrimmage by more than an hour as responders secured the scene.

Despite the frightening visuals, the outcome was far less severe than it could have been.

The parachuter was reported to be stable, later seen with an arm in a sling, but did not require hospitalization.

Gratitude from the Sidelines

Head coach James Franklin addressed the situation following the game, expressing relief and appreciation.

“Happy that the skydiver is OK,” Franklin said. “Most importantly, he’s okay. Wanted to thank all the first responders for how they handled it.”

The university echoed that sentiment, highlighting the swift and coordinated efforts of emergency personnel and event staff.

A Jarring Start to a New Era

The incident marked an unexpected beginning to the Franklin era in Blacksburg, as the Hokies wrapped up spring practices in front of a record crowd.

Once play resumed, attention shifted back to football—with Franklin emphasizing excitement around the program and the opportunity to build something special moving forward.

A Moment That Could Have Been Much Worse

While the crash caused visible damage to the scoreboard and a delay in the day’s schedule, the biggest takeaway was simple:

Everyone walked away.

And thanks to quick action and a bit of luck, what could have been a far more serious situation ended with a safe outcome.
