Man Attempts Record With Holiday Marathon

Forty-Two Hours of Christmas Spirit
Most people tap out of Christmas music by December 26. David Purchase sang straight through it. For 42 consecutive hours, the 63-year-old shop owner from Gloucester, England, belted out Christmas songs in an extraordinary attempt to break a world record—and to bring his community together during the holidays.

From Local Shopkeeper to Marathon Singer
Purchase owns a small sandwich shop on the historic Gloucester Docks and grew up surrounded by music. Inspired by memories of singing as a child and by a desire to create a unifying Christmas event, he set out to beat the Guinness Christmas singing marathon record. What started as a creative idea quickly became a grueling physical and vocal challenge.

Training Like an Endurance Athlete
Knowing the task would push him to his limits, Purchase trained much like a marathon runner. He ran daily to build lung capacity and stamina, preparing not just his voice but his entire body. Guinness rules allowed short breaks, strict timing between songs, and no repeats within an hour—meaning constant focus for nearly two full days.

Community, Fatigue, and Hallucinations
The event, held at a local brewery, drew a steady stream of supporters, volunteers, and witnesses. As exhaustion set in around the 32-hour mark, Purchase admits he hallucinated and nearly quit. But encouragement from friends, family, and a growing crowd pushed him forward, song by song.

A Finish Worth Remembering
When Purchase finally ended with “Jingle Bells,” the room erupted. Whether or not the record is officially certified by Guinness World Records, Purchase says the real victory was creating a shared memory for his town—one built on perseverance, music, and holiday joy.
