Billy Joel’s Daughter Reflects on Music and Family

Singer-songwriter Alexa Ray Joel is preparing to honor her father, legendary musician Billy Joel, at a special tribute concert while also continuing to build her own path in the music industry.

The upcoming event, The Music of Billy Joel, will bring together a lineup of well-known performers to celebrate Joel’s decades-long career.

For Alexa Ray Joel, the moment is both professional and deeply personal.

A Tribute at Carnegie Hall

The tribute concert will take place at Carnegie Hall, where Alexa Ray Joel will perform songs from her father’s iconic catalog alongside other artists.

The event, organized by promoter Michael Dorf, will feature performers including Rob Thomas, Pat Monahan, and Rufus Wainwright, among others.

Alexa Ray Joel said convincing her father to attend the tribute was important to her.

“This is Carnegie Hall,” she said. “Everyone’s paying tribute to you.”

Billy Joel’s Health Update

The concert comes during a time when Billy Joel has stepped back from touring after being diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus in 2025.

The condition can affect balance, vision, and hearing, and Joel previously suffered a fall during a performance.

According to Alexa Ray Joel, the 76-year-old musician has been actively focusing on recovery through physical therapy and lifestyle changes.

“He’s doing great,” she said, adding that he has been committed to improving his health and staying proactive about treatment.

Balancing Fame and Family

Alexa Ray Joel, whose mother is supermodel Christie Brinkley, grew up surrounded by music.

She recalls childhood moments performing musical numbers at home while her father accompanied her on piano.

Despite that musical upbringing, forging her own identity as an artist has sometimes come with pressure.

Early in her career, she said she felt the need to prove herself beyond her famous surname.

Over time, she has grown more confident in her own voice and creative direction.

Finding Her Own Voice

Alexa Ray Joel continues to develop her own musical style, recently releasing music from her EP Tales From a Winding Tower.

While she still looks to her father for guidance, she says he encourages her to follow her own artistic instincts.

One example came when she recorded a slower version of his hit song “Just the Way You Are,” despite his initial hesitation about the arrangement.

After hearing it, Billy Joel admitted she had proven him wrong.

A Father-Daughter Moment

At the upcoming tribute concert, Alexa Ray Joel plans to perform a Billy Joel song she has never sung publicly before.

While the night will celebrate the legendary career of one of America’s most successful musicians, for Alexa Ray Joel it is also about something simpler.

Behind the iconic “Piano Man,” she says, is still the same person she grew up with.

“At home,” she said, “he’s just dad.”
