Daughter of James Van Der Beek Shares Heartfelt Advice About Grief After Actor’s Passing

A touching message from the young daughter of late actor James Van Der Beek is resonating with fans after she shared how she continues to cope with the loss of her father.

Van Der Beek, best known for starring in the hit television drama Dawson’s Creek, died on February 11 after a battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer. He was 48.

To mark what would have been his 49th birthday, his wife Kimberly shared a video message recorded by their nine-year-old daughter, Emilia, offering heartfelt advice for anyone experiencing grief.

A Child’s Perspective on Loss

In the video, Emilia spoke openly about how she processes the loss of her father.

She encouraged others to talk about their emotions and remember their loved ones by continuing to share everyday moments with them.

“I talk to my dad every day,” Emilia said in the video shared by her mother. “I start with, ‘Hi Dad, I miss you and I love you so much, and I’ll never stop loving you.’”

She explained that she often tells him about her day and how she is feeling.

For Emilia, those simple conversations help her maintain a sense of connection.

Letting Emotions Be Honest

The young girl also offered thoughtful advice about how people should approach grief.

She reminded viewers that it’s okay to cry or feel sad after losing someone they love.

“Be sad because you miss them,” she said, adding that anger and strong emotions are also normal responses.

But she cautioned against blaming yourself for a loved one’s passing, noting that everyone experiences grief differently.

Her message resonated widely online, with many people praising the maturity and compassion in her words.

Remembering a Beloved Actor and Father

Van Der Beek rose to fame in the late 1990s as Dawson Leery in Dawson’s Creek, a role that made him a household name and launched a successful acting career.

He publicly revealed his stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis in November 2024, though he had first received the diagnosis in August 2023.

Shortly before his passing, his wife Kimberly Van Der Beek shared that the couple renewed their wedding vows during an intimate ceremony surrounded by family and friends.

The couple had been married since 2010 and shared six children together.

Holding Onto Love and Memories

In her message, Emilia said she believes her father is now “above the clouds with God” and no longer in pain.

She keeps one of his hats as a cherished memory because it still carries his scent.

More than anything, her words offered a reminder that grief can coexist with love, faith and hope.

“Everybody has different emotions,” she said. “They express it in many different ways.”
