Airline Secrets: How to Cut Down Your Baggage Claim Wait

Waiting at the baggage carousel is one of the most frustrating parts of air travel, but can you actually speed up the process? While many travelers believe the first bags checked are the last off the plane, the truth is more complicated. On wide-body aircraft, luggage is grouped into containers and loaded based on weight balance, not check-in time. Narrow-body planes often use “loose loading,” which means early-checked bags could end up either last on—or first off—depending on storage. International flights add another layer, with security screenings sometimes delaying certain bags. That said, flying business or first class may give your bag priority, and some airlines like Delta and Alaska even guarantee delivery within 20 minutes, offering miles or discounts if they fail. Still, the surest way to avoid waiting is to skip checked baggage altogether and travel carry-on only.
