‘Throning’ Is the Latest Dating Trend: Has Social Media Rewired Romance?

Dating for Clout, Not Connection

In the ever-evolving landscape of modern relationships, a new term has emerged to describe a troubling trend among Gen Z daters: “throning.” The term refers to dating someone for their social status or online influence, rather than genuine emotional connection.

According to USA Today, “throning” involves choosing a partner who can boost one’s image — a relationship built on optics rather than authenticity. As one TikToker put it, “The date is a throne used to elevate the person doing the throning.”

Love in the Age of Optics

Amy Chan, dating coach and author of Unsingle: How to Date Smarter and Create Love That Lasts, explains that social media has amplified the desire for relationships that look good online. “People are curating relationships the same way they curate content,” Chan said. “We live in the age of optics. Social media has turned love into a public performance.”

The concept ties closely to “hypergamy,” the idea of “dating up” — seeking partners of higher status or influence. However, Chan says “throning” adds a modern twist: the chase for clout. In today’s digital world, a partner’s follower count or public persona can hold as much weight as their character.

Finding Real Connection Again

Experts say the best way to avoid falling into the trap of “throning” is through self-awareness and honest communication. “Ask yourself what you truly value,” Chan advises. “Emotional safety can’t exist without honesty.”

As dating continues to evolve in the social media age, “throning” serves as a reminder that likes, followers, and status symbols can’t replace authentic connection.
