Travel Smarter: Insider Hotel Tips You Need to Know

Working behind the front desk gave one hotel employee an inside look at how hotels really operate—and it completely changed the way they travel. Smart Traveler recently shared insider tips that every guest should know before booking their next stay.

White Sheets Tell the Real Story

Hotels use white sheets because they can be bleached and sanitized thoroughly. Stains are treated overnight, and most linens are replaced within a year. Even beds that don’t appear to have been slept in get fresh linens. If you’re looking for reassurance, white sheets are usually the cleanest bet.

Why You Shouldn’t Trust the Bedspread

Unlike sheets, bedspreads are rarely washed between guests. If you see patterned covers in a listing, consider another hotel. Look for all-white linens, and remove decorative pillows or throws before using the bed.

Last-Minute Deals Are Real

Hotels aren’t always as full as they look. Outside peak travel weekends, you can often grab discounted rooms at the last minute. Flexibility pays off if you’re hoping to save.

Bring Your Own Wipes

The TV remote is one of the dirtiest items in any hotel room. Wipe it down or slip it into a plastic bag from the ice bucket. High-touch areas like phones, fridges, and coffee makers deserve the same treatment.

Discounts and Loyalty Perks

From AAA to corporate or hospital rates, discounts are often available if you ask. Loyalty programs can also unlock upgrades, free WiFi, and early or late check-in perks.

The bottom line: hotels have their secrets, but travelers who know them can enjoy cleaner rooms, better deals, and more rewarding stays.
