Minnesota Senator Warns Walz Budget Will Lead to Property Tax Hikes

Senator John Jasinski is raising concerns over Governor Tim Walz’s proposed budget, warning that it could lead to significant property tax increases across Minnesota. In an open letter, Jasinski criticized the governor’s plan to shift $460 million in human services costs onto counties, which he argues will force local governments to raise property taxes to cover the shortfall.

Jasinski pointed to last year’s $19 billion surplus, which he says was irresponsibly spent by Legislative Democrats, leading to the state’s current $5.1 billion deficit. Now, he argues, the governor is trying to fix the financial shortfall by shifting costs to local governments, burdening taxpayers—including seniors, small business owners, and farmers.

County officials have echoed his concerns, warning of steep tax hikes. A Clay County commissioner estimated the county would face a $3.2 million annual shortfall, requiring a nearly 7% property tax increase. Commissioners from Otter Tail and Scott counties also raised alarms about the long-term sustainability of the governor’s proposal.

Jasinski vowed to push back against the cost shifts, stating that Minnesota “shouldn’t balance its books on the backs of property taxpayers.”
