Independents Are Sending Washington a Warning

This week’s Discussion Points looks at a voter group that neither party can afford to ignore: independents.

In his latest Roll Call column, “Unhappy Independents Will Decide This Election,” David Winston breaks down why independent voters are once again positioned to shape the outcome of the midterm elections — and why their mood should concern both parties.

The numbers tell a clear story. According to the latest Winning the Issues survey, 71% of independents believe the country is seriously off on the wrong track, while 72% say the same about the economy. Their top concern is not political noise or partisan drama. It is the cost of everyday life.

Among independents, 74% say inflation is getting worse, and 75% believe the cost of living is rising faster than their wages. A majority say they are living paycheck to paycheck. Those are not abstract political data points. They reflect the daily pressure families, workers, retirees, and small business owners are feeling across the country.

Winston makes the case that the old campaign model of attacking the other side and turning out the base is not likely to be enough. Independents are frustrated with Washington, skeptical of both parties, and looking for solutions that speak directly to their economic concerns.

That creates both a warning and an opportunity. The party that can credibly address inflation, wages, spending, and cost-of-living relief will have a stronger chance of earning the support of the voters who may ultimately decide control of Congress.

At Think American News, we believe these conversations matter because they move beyond political spin and toward the real concerns shaping American life.
