Polls Reveal Mixed Views as Shutdown Enters Day One

The federal government shut down on October 1 after Congress failed to strike a deal by the September 30 deadline. This marks the nation’s 15th shutdown since 1981. As the lights went out in Washington, polls showed Americans split on who deserves the blame.
Polls Show Split Blame Across Parties
A New York Times survey revealed that most voters blame both parties. Thirty-three percent of respondents said Republicans and Democrats share responsibility, while 26% faulted congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump. Nineteen percent said Democrats bear the blame, and 21% admitted they didn’t know enough about the crisis to decide.
Independent voters leaned harder against Republicans. They were twice as likely to assign blame to Trump and the GOP than to Democrats. Even so, two-thirds of voters said Democrats should not allow a shutdown if their demands go unmet.
Marist Poll Highlights Growing Frustration
A Marist Poll released the same day painted a similar picture. Thirty-eight percent of Americans said Republicans would be to blame, while 31% pointed to both parties and 27% blamed Democrats. Only 4% said neither party deserved fault.
Broader Discontent with Leadership
Polls also captured widespread dissatisfaction with congressional leaders. A Pew Research Center survey showed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer earning the lowest approval ratings of the four top leaders. Respondents also gave President Trump and Vice President JD Vance more negative than positive ratings.
Medicaid Cuts at the Center of the Standoff
Democrats pushed Republicans to roll back recent Medicaid cuts and extend health subsidies set to expire at year’s end. Republicans, in turn, accused Democrats of blocking their proposal to keep the government funded. With no resolution in sight, voters now watch two parties dig in rather than compromise.
A Frustrated Electorate
Polls show Americans aren’t rallying behind either side. Instead, frustration grows as Washington once again reaches a stalemate — and the nation’s government grinds to a halt.
