Boehnke Travels to Denmark in Push for Smarter Energy Future

State Senator Matt Boehnke, has joined the newly launched Western Energy Caucus (WEC), a bipartisan group of lawmakers from 11 western states focused on securing a more reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy future across the region.

Boehnke was selected to represent Washington based on his legislative leadership in clean-tech innovation, workforce development, and public-private energy partnerships. As part of the caucus’s inaugural initiative, Boehnke traveled with the WEC’s international delegation to Denmark in June to explore global best practices in energy generation, transmission, and storage.

“Energy policy is one of the most critical issues of our time,” said Boehnke. “The decisions we make today will shape the future of economic growth, public safety, and environmental quality across our region.”

The Western Energy Caucus aims to tackle complex challenges including grid resilience, wildfire risk, carbon management, and aging transmission infrastructure. By working across state lines and party lines, the WEC hopes to craft innovative policy solutions that meet the growing energy demands of the West—while maintaining affordability and environmental responsibility.

While in Denmark, Boehnke and fellow lawmakers toured advanced energy facilities and met with Danish officials and private-sector leaders. The trip included deep dives into district heating systems, offshore wind development, and carbon capture technologies—insights Boehnke says can be adapted to strengthen Washington’s energy future.

“This kind of collaboration gives us a broader perspective on what’s possible,” Boehnke added. “Whether we’re expanding nuclear, modernizing our grid, or creating clean-energy jobs in the Tri-Cities, Washington should be leading the way.”

The Western Energy Caucus plans two more regional summits later this year, where members will draft model legislation and identify key energy priorities for 2026. Boehnke said he will continue to advocate for forward-thinking energy policies that reflect Washington’s strengths and needs.

“As part of the Western Energy Caucus, I’ll ensure that our region—and especially the Tri-Cities—has a strong voice in shaping smart, long-term energy solutions,” said Boehnke. “This is about building an energy future that works for everyone.”
