NBC News Stay Tuned Poll: A Nation Divided on Political Representation and Economic Concerns

A striking finding from the latest NBC News Stay Tuned Poll, powered by SurveyMonkey, conducted between April 11 and April 20, 2025, reveals a growing sentiment among U.S. adults that neither political party truly represents the interests of ordinary citizens. This sentiment was expressed most strongly by those aged 18-29, with 41% of young adults claiming that neither the Republican nor Democratic Party fights for people like them. This distrust in the political establishment was mirrored across other age groups, signaling a shift in political attitudes that may influence future elections.

The results also underscore a broad sense of disillusionment with both major political parties, with 38% of respondents (especially younger voters) feeling that neither party addresses their needs. Interestingly, Gen Z (18-29) respondents were especially vocal, with many expressing frustration over the lack of representation in Washington, particularly concerning economic issues such as inflation, housing costs, and student loan debt—concerns that are deeply felt among younger generations.

While Republicans and Democrats battle over key issues, disillusionment runs deep among voters who feel their concerns are sidelined. This sentiment is particularly poignant when examining economic concerns. For instance, 44% of adults cited inflation and the rising cost of living as the most pressing issue, with younger adults especially feeling the squeeze. Yet, despite these pressures, many respondents remain unconvinced that either party is tackling these issues effectively.

The poll also revealed an age-based trust divide in political leaders. While older generations expressed stronger faith in the status quo, with 53% of respondents aged 65+ identifying with national parties, younger generations (especially Gen Z) reported feeling that politicians on both sides are out of touch with their realities. The feeling that “politicians don’t represent people like you and me” was amplified in the 18-29 age group, where 41% expressed frustration over a lack of genuine representation.

In fact, a significant percentage of respondents in this age group voiced a desire for new leadership—individuals who are in tune with their struggles, including mounting student debt, housing affordability, and career prospects in an increasingly uncertain job market. The idea of electing new generations of leaders to take charge in Washington resonated strongly among younger voters, who have increasingly turned to alternative sources of information and activism to express their political voices.

This frustration is clear when looking at how young adults view their role in the political system. 41% of Gen Z respondents said they felt alienated by both major parties, reflecting a growing demand for authentic leadership that goes beyond the political establishment. In contrast to older voters, who remain more loyal to traditional political lines, younger voters are increasingly leaning toward independent candidates or advocating for more grassroots movements to address their economic and social concerns.

As the country navigates a rapidly changing political landscape, one thing is clear: a growing number of Americans feel disconnected from the traditional political institutions, believing that these institutions are not reflecting their needs. The question now is whether this generational frustration will fuel new movements, or if the major political parties will find a way to reconnect with voters and prove that they do indeed represent “people like you and me.”

For many, the message is loud and clear—change is needed, and the time may be ripe for a new approach to political representation in Washington.
