Honoring America’s Military Heroes: Texas Military Heroes Week

In every corner of the United States, we are reminded of the sacrifices made by our brave military members. This week, as Texas observes Military Heroes Week, Americans are reminded of the sacrifices made by our military members, both past and present. Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., is encouraging all Americans to honor those who have fought for our freedoms, particularly veterans and active-duty service members. As Chairwoman of the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB), Buckingham has a front-row view of the dedication and commitment of these brave individuals.
In a recent press release, Buckingham expressed the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by military personnel throughout history. “As Chairwoman of the Texas Veterans Land Board, I am reminded every day of the cost of service to our nation and the sacrifices made by those who have and continue to fight for our freedoms daily,” she said. “From the earliest battles, like the Alamo right here in Texas, to conflicts overseas, please join me in honoring all who have helped secure our freedom throughout the years and those who are defending it still. We truly are the land of the free because of the brave.”
Texas is home to a proud military history, and the VLB has long been dedicated to serving those who have answered the call to protect our country. With 15 military installations across the state, Texas is a hub of military activity and veteran care. The VLB operates state-of-the-art long-term care facilities, veteran cemeteries, and offers low-interest loans to veterans seeking to buy homes or land. Through these efforts, the state continues to support veterans and their families, ensuring they receive the care and benefits they have earned.
While Texas’ observance of Military Heroes Week is deeply significant, it is far from the only state honoring military service members in unique ways. Across the country, other states have established their own events and traditions to celebrate the sacrifices of military personnel. In Alabama, the Semper Fi Community Task Force hosts an annual Heroes’ Week from November 7 to 12, honoring both military members and first responders, along with their families. This week features community events and ceremonies that recognize the contributions of these heroes, creating a moment of collective reflection for the community.
In North Carolina, Appalachian State University organizes its own “Heroes Week,” running from November 1 to 11. This series of events celebrates military service and supports student veterans. Activities during Heroes Week include a silent auction, tailgate parties, and a football game, all aimed at raising awareness and providing support for veterans and their families.
West Virginia also observes its own unique tribute to military personnel with Gene Vance Jr. Day on May 18, a day dedicated to the American soldiers who served in Afghanistan and Iraq. The state hosts citywide ceremonies, including wreath-laying and proclamations, with participation from national organizations. It’s a heartfelt way to honor the legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
On a national level, the United States recognizes Armed Forces Day every third Saturday in May, a day set aside to honor those currently serving in the military. Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is another nationwide event that pays tribute to military personnel who died in service to the country. These observances are not bound by state lines—they unite Americans across the nation to reflect on the sacrifices made for our freedom.
While each state may have its own way of celebrating and honoring military service, the collective spirit of gratitude and respect is felt nationwide. These observances, whether on a state or national level, serve as a reminder that the freedoms we enjoy come at a cost. The men and women who have served in the military continue to be an integral part of our national identity. As we recognize Texas Military Heroes Week, we also honor the military heroes in every state, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten.
Veterans and service members, whether from Texas, North Carolina, West Virginia, or elsewhere, have contributed to the freedoms we hold dear. It is our responsibility as Americans to continue supporting them, ensuring that they are provided with the care and recognition they deserve. For veterans in Texas, the VLB’s Texas Veterans Call Center is available at 1-800-252-8387 to provide information about the benefits they have earned. Similarly, across the country, local veteran services are available to ensure that those who have given so much are never left behind.
As Americans, we must unite in our gratitude, recognizing that we are the land of the free because of the brave. This week, and every day, we honor our military heroes, knowing that their sacrifices ensure the continued strength and freedom of our nation.
