What Really Happens When You Eat Too Much Protein

Too much protein isn’t always a good thing. Nutrition expert Margaret Murray explains that while protein is essential for building muscle, making hormones, and keeping our immune system strong, most adults are already getting more than enough. Going overboard doesn’t add extra muscle and can actually cause problems. Excess protein may be stored as fat, strain kidneys in people with kidney disease, or even lead to “protein poisoning” if it crowds out carbs and fats. Where your protein comes from matters, too: plant-based sources like beans and whole grains are linked to lower risks of diabetes and cancer, while high intake of animal protein can raise health risks. The key takeaway? Balance your diet and don’t treat protein like the only nutrient that matters.
