Lost Puppy Found by Drone in Freezing Cold

After more than 24 hours lost in freezing temperatures, a five-month-old puppy named Shade was found in just 41 minutes—thanks to a veteran-founded drone rescue team and a bit of hope that refused to fade.

A Frightened Puppy Vanishes Into the Cold
Shade, an American Bully mix, bolted during an evening walk in New Jersey after a sudden noise startled him. As darkness fell, winds picked up and light snow began to fall. Neighbors searched, familiar scents were placed outside the home, and local pet-finding services were contacted—but nothing worked.

A Last Call for Help
With time slipping by, Gina was referred to the USAR Drone Team, a veteran-based nonprofit that assists with rescues using drone technology. Founded by Michael Parziale in honor of his World War II veteran father, the team also supports open-water rescues and emergency searches from its base in Manasquan.

Thermal Technology Turns the Tide
USAR arrived around 7:15 p.m. and launched a drone equipped with a thermal camera—ideal for locating animals at night. For about 20 minutes, the drone detected wildlife near wooded areas. Then, an unmistakable heat signature appeared.

It was Shade.

Found in Just 41 Minutes
Following a proven search pattern that starts close to home, the team located Shade just two blocks away. When a family member called out, the puppy came running. From launch to reunion, the rescue took just 41 minutes—a new record for the Jersey Shore-area drone team.

A Reunion Worthy of the Big Screen
Michael called the moment “cinematic,” and for Gina, it was nothing short of miraculous. USAR doesn’t charge for rescues and relies on donations to expand its life-saving work—helping reunite families with pets, and sometimes saving lives.

In the coldest moments, a warm reminder emerged: kindness, service, and a little technology can change everything.
