The Promise That Built St. Jude — and Still Saves Lives

A Promise That Became a Lifeline

More than six decades ago, entertainer Danny Thomas made a vow to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes. If his career succeeded, Thomas promised to build a place where children from anywhere in the world could receive lifesaving care. On Feb. 4, 1962, that promise became reality with the opening of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

From the start, St. Jude’s mission was revolutionary: no child would be denied treatment because of race, religion, or a family’s inability to pay.

Breaking Barriers in Pediatric Medicine

At a time when childhood cancer was often considered a death sentence, St. Jude set out to challenge the odds. The hospital combined cutting-edge research with compassionate care, creating a model that allowed discoveries to move rapidly from lab to bedside.

Today, St. Jude is home to some of the world’s leading pediatric researchers. Because the hospital is funded primarily by donations, scientists can pursue complex, high-risk research that would be difficult elsewhere — accelerating progress and innovation.

Care Without a Bill

For families, the St. Jude promise goes beyond medical treatment. Patients never receive a bill for care, travel, housing, or food. That financial relief allows parents to focus on what matters most: their child’s survival.

Many families describe crossing through St. Jude’s red gates as the moment hope returned — a turning point after weeks or months of fear and uncertainty.

Progress — and the Work Still Ahead

Since St. Jude opened, survival rates for childhood cancer have risen from about 20% to nearly 80%, thanks in large part to treatments developed at the hospital. Yet the mission is far from complete. One in five children diagnosed with cancer still does not survive.

Former patients, like Charlie — now in remission — say that reality fuels their desire to give back and support future breakthroughs.

Keeping the Promise Alive

Fundraisers such as the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway help sustain Danny Thomas’ original vow. Each donation ensures that hope, research, and care remain available — for every child, everywhere.
