Why Raleigh Is Ranking Among America’s Happiest Cities
If you’re searching for a place where quality of life meets everyday contentment, you might not have to look far. A new report highlights Raleigh as one of the happiest places to live in the country.
A Strong Showing Nationwide
According to a study from SmartAsset, Raleigh ranks No. 5 among the largest cities in the United States when it comes to overall happiness.
The rankings evaluated 85 major cities using data tied to financial stability, well-being, and quality of life—factors that collectively shape how people experience day-to-day living.
Well-Being Leads the Way
Raleigh’s strongest category was well-being.
The city boasts one of the longest life expectancies in the country, averaging around 81 years. Residents also report strong mental health and high levels of physical activity, with about 84% of adults regularly exercising.
Those habits—combined with access to parks, recreation, and community spaces—play a key role in supporting overall happiness.
A Lifestyle That Reduces Stress
Beyond health, Raleigh stands out for practical reasons that impact daily life.
Compared to many large cities, it has less traffic congestion on major roads—something that can significantly reduce stress. The area also offers a balance of space, amenities, and access to outdoor activities, giving residents room to spread out without sacrificing convenience.
Not Perfect—But Competitive
Like any city, Raleigh isn’t without its challenges.
The report notes more average rankings in areas like marriage rates and access to certain fitness spaces. And in a separate ranking from WalletHub, Raleigh placed lower, showing how different methodologies can shape results.
Still, its overall performance keeps it firmly in the conversation.
How It Compares
Raleigh isn’t alone in representing North Carolina on the list. Charlotte ranked No. 13, while Greensboro landed at No. 37.
Nationwide, Arlington took the top spot, followed by cities in California and Seattle.
What Makes a Place Feel Like Home
The takeaway isn’t just about rankings—it’s about what actually creates a sense of happiness.
Financial stability. Health. Connection. Space to live without constant pressure.
Raleigh checks many of those boxes.
And for the people who call it home, that balance may be what makes all the difference.
