New Study Warns: Smartphones Before Age 13 May Harm Kids’ Mental Health

New research is sounding the alarm on smartphones and mental health—especially for kids under 13. A global study published in the Journal of the Human Development and Capabilities found that early smartphone use is linked to increased suicidal thoughts, poor emotional regulation, and lower self-worth, particularly among girls. The survey, which included nearly 2 million participants across 163 countries, revealed that the younger a child is when they get a smartphone, the more at risk they may be. Researchers are calling for global restrictions and stronger regulations, warning that individual families alone can’t fight the digital tide. Experts suggest delaying smartphones and social media until at least age 16, encouraging collective action among parents to set healthier boundaries.
