Two Marines, One Mission

From Marines to Deputies
Aaliyah and Jared Giel’s story is a reminder that service doesn’t end when the uniform changes. The married couple, both U.S. Marine Corps veterans, recently graduated together from the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office (VBSO) Basic Academy, officially beginning their careers as certified deputy sheriffs. Their side-by-side graduation marked a unique milestone for Class 61 and highlighted the growing role veterans play in local law enforcement.

Training Built on Service
The Giels credit their military background with preparing them for the intense physical, mental, and academic demands of the academy. From early mornings and rigorous training blocks to the discipline required to master legal procedures and crisis response, the transition from military life to law enforcement felt like a natural continuation of their commitment to serve. Throughout the 17-week program, they leaned on teamwork, communication, and resilience—skills forged during their time in uniform.

A Shared Journey
The couple met while serving in the Marine Corps in Indian Head, Maryland, and their parallel paths through training reinforced the value of partnership under pressure. Graduating together wasn’t just a personal achievement—it symbolized the power of shared purpose. Their story also reflects the broader impact veterans have within the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office, where roughly 30 percent of sworn positions are filled by former service members.

Serving the Community at Home
Now assigned to the Virginia Beach Correctional Center, the Giels will join more than 400 sworn deputy sheriffs working to protect and serve the community. Their journey from military service to public safety underscores how veterans continue to bring leadership, accountability, and dedication into civilian roles—strengthening the institutions that keep communities safe.
