Quick-Thinking Golfer Saves Friend During Video Call Heart Emergency

A Video Call Turns Into a Lifesaving Mission
What began as an ordinary chat between golf friends quickly became a race against time. Shannon Jeffries was preparing for her weekly nine holes with her longtime golf partner, 60-year-old Darren Oliver, when he called to cancel, saying he felt unwell. But as they spoke, Shannon watched Darren’s face turn gray on the screen. He began to stutter — and then suddenly dropped out of view.
Shannon knew instantly something was terribly wrong.
A Friend Who Refused to Hesitate
With no time to spare, she called Bewdley Pines Golf Club, where staff provided Darren’s address. She rushed to his home and found him slumped over the steering wheel of his car. Unable to pull the 280-pound golfer from the vehicle, she followed emergency instructions to recline his seat and tilt his head back to help clear his airway until paramedics arrived.
On the way to the hospital, Darren suffered a heart attack in the ambulance and required resuscitation. Doctors warned Shannon she might need to say goodbye. Instead, she placed a golf ball in his hand and urged him to keep fighting — a small gesture that carried enormous emotional weight.
A Remarkable Recovery and a Lifelong Bond
Darren underwent emergency surgery to place two stents in blocked arteries and spent two and a half weeks recovering in the hospital. Months later, he has lost 112 pounds, returned to the golf course, and even joined Shannon in raising more than $2,000 for the British Heart Foundation with a 36-hole charity challenge.
Grateful for his recovery — and for the friend who helped make it possible — Darren now carries that same golf ball in his bag everywhere he goes. As he puts it, “It’s terrible to think what might have been if she hadn’t got to me.”
