11 Ducklings Rescued From Long Island Storm Drain

A stressful afternoon for one mother duck turned into a happy ending after 11 ducklings were rescued from a storm drain on Long Island.

The rescue happened Sunday in Seaford, where concerned residents noticed the ducklings trapped underground and called local animal rescuer John DeBacker for help.

Mother Duck Waited Nearby

Video shared from the scene showed the mother duck pacing nervously near the storm drain while rescuers worked to free her babies one by one.

Using a net, DeBacker carefully scooped the ducklings from the drain as neighbors gathered nearby to help and cheer on the rescue effort.

At one point, the final duckling repeatedly slipped through the net before eventually being pulled safely to the surface.

Community Helps Guide the Family Home

Once all 11 ducklings were safely rescued, DeBacker and nearby residents helped escort the duck family toward a nearby canal.

Moments later, the reunited family was seen swimming away together.

The heartwarming rescue quickly drew attention online, with many viewers praising both the rescuers and the concerned residents who stepped in to help.

Spring Brings Busy Season for Animal Rescuers

Wildlife rescuers say spring and early summer often lead to an increase in calls involving ducklings, birds, and other young animals that accidentally become trapped in drains, ponds, or urban areas.

Experts often remind the public to contact trained rescuers rather than attempting complicated rescues alone, especially when wildlife is involved.

For this Seaford duck family, however, teamwork — and a little patience — helped bring all 11 ducklings safely back to their mother.
