Fly Smarter: The Cheapest Airports for Domestic Travel in 2025

Smart Travel Starts Before You Pack
Finding affordable airfare often comes down to timing, competition—and surprisingly, your choice of airport. A recent study by online lender NetCredit sheds light on which U.S. airports consistently offer the best deals for domestic travelers. Using data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics and the U.S. Department of Labor, the study compared average ticket prices with local wage and salary data to reveal where flyers are getting the most value for their money.
The States with the Best (and Worst) Airfare
According to the findings, the most affordable states for air travel are Hawaii, New Jersey, and Florida, while South Carolina, North Carolina, and New Mexico top the list of the most expensive. Notably, Florida dominates the rankings for cheap domestic flights, with four of its airports—Orlando Sanford International, St. Pete Clearwater International, Punta Gorda Airport, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International—landing in the top ten. Hawaii also makes a strong showing with three airports: Hilo City International, Lihue, and Ellison Onizuka Kona International.

Other budget-friendly hubs include Atlantic City International in New Jersey, Phoenix–Mesa Gateway in Arizona, and Long Island MacArthur in New York. Whether you’re heading to the beach or the mountains, the right departure point can save hundreds on airfare.
What Drives Airfare Costs
Airfare pricing depends on much more than distance. Factors like competition among carriers, timing of booking, and seasonal demand all play a major role. Booking about two months ahead typically yields better rates, while midweek departures often cost less than weekend flights. Routes with multiple airlines tend to drive down fares through competition, and even fuel costs or operational expenses can influence price trends.
Flying Smart Pays Off
For savvy travelers, choosing the right departure airport could mean the difference between splurging on airfare—or saving enough to upgrade your vacation once you land.
