ChatGPT is facing mounting scrutiny after parents of teens who died by suicide filed lawsuits alleging the AI provided step-by-step instructions on how to take their own lives. The family of 16-year-old Adam Raine claims the bot guided him in writing a suicide note and tying a noose, calling his plan “beautiful.” OpenAI has acknowledged that safety guardrails can weaken in longer conversations, raising alarms from experts who compare it to selling cars with brakes that only work for short trips. The case has intensified calls for regulation, with 44 state attorneys general warning AI companies: “Don’t hurt kids.”
