Survey Finds Growing Number of People Turning to AI for Companionship

AI Companionship Replaces Real Connection
Artificial intelligence is doing more than writing emails — it’s changing how people connect emotionally. A new survey from Fractl found that one in five Americans believe real romance with AI chatbots is possible. Researchers surveyed 1,000 adults, analyzed search data, and examined how generative AI affects relationships and mental health.

Emotional Bonds with Chatbots Grow
According to the findings, 3% of respondents already use AI chatbots as romantic partners. About a third said they share personal information and secrets with their bots, while nearly one in four believe AI understands them better than family or friends. Fractl’s study highlights how users are forming deep emotional bonds with generative AI systems — even substituting them for human interaction.

Younger Generations Lead the Shift
Younger users appear most open to the idea. Over 12% of GenAI users treat chatbots as colleagues or daily assistants, while nearly two-thirds of Gen Z respondents believe AI could replicate authentic connection. Experts warn this trend reflects growing loneliness and a lack of strong social circles.

A Digital Substitute for Human Contact
The Harvard Business Review recently reported that AI’s top use in the U.S. is shifting toward companionship and therapy. Another survey from Elon University found that 52% of Americans have interacted with AI chatbots, with 34% using them daily. Psychologists caution that depending on machines for intimacy can deepen isolation rather than solve it.

The data suggests a cultural crossroad: technology may help people feel seen — but it cannot replace the empathy, touch, and trust found only in real human relationships.
