Alex Riley Tapped to Lead Missouri House in 2027

Springfield Republican Rep. Alex Riley has been chosen by Missouri House Republicans as their speaker designee, positioning him to take over as House speaker in 2027, pending reelection and a full House vote. Riley, who currently serves as House Majority Floor Leader, would become only the second speaker in Missouri history from Springfield. In a statement, Riley said he was “humbled” by the confidence of his colleagues and pledged to continue promoting policies that grow Missouri’s economy and safeguard individual liberty. If elected, Riley will likely play a central role in shaping education funding reforms and continuing efforts to eliminate the state income tax. His election comes just after a contentious special session in which he supported proposals to restrict ballot initiatives and solidify GOP control of congressional districts.
