96% of Drivers Admit to Road Rage, AAA Study Finds

A new study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety shows just how widespread road rage has become on America’s highways. An overwhelming 96% of drivers admitted to aggressive driving in the past year, with behaviors ranging from speeding and cutting off other cars to honking in anger. Alarmingly, 11% confessed to violent actions like bumping another vehicle or confronting a driver. Researchers say road rage is “contagious,” creating a cycle where hostility fuels more hostility. Aggression behind the wheel has sharply risen since AAA’s last report in 2016, with cutting off other cars up 67% and angry honking up 47%. Experts warn that while stress on the road is common, courtesy is key to breaking the trend. AAA is urging drivers to prioritize patience, give space to aggressive motorists, and focus on safety—reminding us all that good manners on the road aren’t just polite, they’re life-saving.
