First Responders Join Hands in Search for Missing Swimmer

Authorities say the teenager, who is from the Bronx, disappeared Tuesday afternoon after entering the ocean with friends during New York City’s early-season heat wave.
According to officials, the teen was last seen around 3:30 p.m. near Beach 73rd Street and Shore Front Parkway.
Massive Search Effort Launched
Video captured during the emergency response showed members of the New York City Police Department and Fire Department of the City of New York working together in rough surf conditions as they searched the water.
Rescue crews formed a human chain stretching through the waves while SCUBA units, air support teams, and additional responders continued scanning the area.
Police sources told local outlets the teenager and another swimmer were overtaken by a wave while in the water.
One friend resurfaced safely.
The missing teen did not.
Witnesses said several friends desperately tried to pull him back to shore before he was swept away.
Witnesses Describe Emotional Scene
People gathered on the beach described scenes of panic and heartbreak as the situation unfolded.
“It swept him out of his hand,” witness Nemiah Dos Santos said while describing the rescue attempt.
Another witness recalled seeing teenagers crying while trying to call family members and explain what had happened.
For many watching from shore, the incident unfolded within seconds.
No Lifeguards on Duty
Officials noted that lifeguards were not yet stationed at city beaches because the summer beach season does not officially begin until Memorial Day weekend.
The incident has renewed concerns about the dangers of entering open water before beaches are fully staffed and supervised.
Ocean currents, rip tides, and rapidly changing surf conditions can become especially dangerous even for experienced swimmers.
A Community Hoping for Answers
As the search continued Tuesday evening, rescue crews remained focused on locating the teenager and supporting his devastated friends and family.
The investigation remains ongoing.
