Ohio Family Turns Tragedy Into Community Compassion

One month after losing their 9-year-old son in a tragic accident, a family in Green is choosing to honor his memory the same way he lived his life:

By helping others.

The family of Samuel Rife says the third grader’s compassion, humor, and generosity touched countless people during his short life—and now they hope those qualities continue inspiring kindness throughout their community.

“His memory can live on and he’s still doing good because Sam was somebody who never stopped doing good,” said his father, Rev. Harlen Rife of Greensburg United Methodist Church.

Remembering a Boy Who Loved Helping Others

Sam was known by friends and family as someone who constantly tried to include others and make people smile.

“He always wanted to bring a smile wherever he went,” his mother, Madeline Rife, said.

Despite being only 9 years old, Sam was already deeply involved in volunteer work.

He participated in projects building beds for families in need and also helped serve meals through Canton Food Not Bombs.

His parents say service was simply part of who he was.

Turning Grief Into Action

On April 17, Sam died after being struck by a vehicle while playing outside in his neighborhood.

In the weeks since, support for the Rife family has poured in from classmates, churches, baseball teammates, and community members.

Friends created memorial buttons featuring Sam’s picture.
His baseball team began wearing “Make Sam Proud” arm sleeves.
Students honored him by wearing colorful socks—something Sam famously loved.

But rather than keep financial donations for themselves, the Rife family chose to redirect more than $30,000 in contributions to Family Support Services, a local organization that helps families with food, clothing, housing assistance, and basic needs.

“I think what small good can come out of this has been helpful,” Madeline Rife said.

A Scholarship That Will Carry His Name Forward

The family has also established the Samuel Rife Scholarship, which will support graduating seniors who once received assistance through Family Support Services.

The first scholarships are already being awarded.

For Sam’s father, one future moment carries especially deep meaning:

The day scholarships are awarded to students from Sam’s own graduating class years from now.

‘Make Sam Proud’

Additional acts of kindness continue spreading throughout the community in Sam’s memory.

Area churches have launched sock drives inspired by his love for colorful, knee-high socks. Many of the donated socks will go to families in need through Green Good Neighbors.

His classmates recently gathered wearing bright socks in tribute, standing together in a circle to honor their friend.

In the midst of unimaginable grief, the Rife family says they are trying to focus on the kind of legacy Sam would have wanted.

Not one centered on tragedy.

But one centered on kindness.

And judging by the response from the community, that legacy is already growing.
