Leading with Kindness: University of Miami Senior Leaves Lasting Impact Across Campus
At University of Miami, one graduating senior is proving that leadership doesn’t always start with a title—it starts with how you treat people.
For Margaret Todd, kindness has been the foundation of everything she’s done.
A Leadership Style Rooted in Kindness
Whether it’s a handwritten note, a thoughtful gift, or a simple word of encouragement, Todd has built a reputation for lifting others up.
Friends and mentors say it’s more than just small gestures—it’s a mindset.
“She is so positive in every room that she enters but wants to make sure that other people feel that way too,” one friend shared.
That approach has helped her foster a sense of connection across campus, from student government meetings to campus organizations.
Making an Impact Across Campus
Todd’s influence stretches far beyond one role.
She has served on the Student Government Executive Board, led sustainability efforts through the ECO Agency, contributed to the Homecoming Executive Committee, and worked in the Division of Student Affairs communications office.
Her ability to bring people together—and make them feel heard—has been a defining part of her leadership.
Mentors describe her as someone who not only contributes but elevates those around her.
Balancing Science, Service, and Strategy
Academically, Todd graduates with honors from the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, majoring in ocean sciences with minors in meteorology and geospatial technology.
Her senior thesis explored how Saharan dust may influence sargassum blooms in the Caribbean—research that reflects both scientific curiosity and real-world impact.
At the same time, she gained hands-on experience in communications, writing articles and helping shape messaging for the university.
It’s a combination that speaks to both her versatility and drive.
Creating a Culture of Inclusion
One of Todd’s most meaningful contributions may be the environment she helped create.
From writing weekly questions on office whiteboards to spark conversation, to organizing collaborative campus events, she consistently looked for ways to bring people together.
“She makes it her goal to include everyone and make them feel welcome,” a mentor noted.
That focus on inclusion has left a lasting impression on the campus community.
Looking Ahead
After graduation, Todd hopes to combine her passions for marine science and communications—two fields she was able to explore fully during her time at Miami.
Her journey reflects something bigger than academic success.
It’s a reminder that leadership isn’t just about achievements—it’s about impact.
And sometimes, the most powerful way to lead is through kindness.
