Virginia Woman Steps Up for Struggling TSA Staff

As TSA workers face missed paychecks during the ongoing government shutdown, one Virginia woman is turning compassion into action.

In Norfolk, a grassroots effort is helping ease the burden for airport employees struggling to make ends meet.

Helping Those Who Keep Travel Moving

At Norfolk International Airport, TSA workers are continuing to report for duty — even as paychecks have been delayed due to the partial government shutdown impacting the Department of Homeland Security.

For many, the financial strain is immediate. Bills continue to pile up, with no pause for rent, groceries, or fuel.

A Simple Idea Turns Into Action

That reality inspired Hampton Roads resident Shawn Somerville to step in.

A school nurse and nonprofit leader, Somerville launched a donation drive she calls “Carry-On Kindness,” aimed at supporting TSA employees facing financial hardship.

Her efforts began with collecting gas cards, but quickly expanded into gathering non-perishable food to help stock a pantry for workers at the airport.

Community Support in Motion

Through her nonprofit, Authentic Blessings, and with help from local partners, Somerville has filled her vehicle with supplies — enough to feed dozens of people.

The response from the community has been strong, with donations helping provide both practical support and a morale boost for workers navigating uncertainty.

Filling the Gaps

Somerville says her organization exists to step in where help is needed most — and right now, that means supporting workers caught in the middle of a federal shutdown.

Many TSA employees are still recovering from previous pay disruptions, making this latest delay even more challenging.

A Reminder of Everyday Generosity

While the shutdown continues, efforts like “Carry-On Kindness” highlight the power of local action.

For the workers who keep travelers safe every day, a simple act of generosity can go a long way — helping them carry on through uncertain times.
