Red Cross Urges Donations as Blood Supply Drops

Winter Storms Deepen a Growing Blood Crisis
The American Red Cross is warning of a severe blood shortage following widespread winter storms that forced the cancellation of hundreds of blood drives across the country. The organization says hospital demand is now outpacing supply, leading to a roughly 35% drawdown of available blood products over the past month.

Canceled Drives Leave Thousands of Donations Uncollected
According to the Red Cross, winter weather disrupted blood collection efforts nationwide. More than 200 blood drives were canceled in recent days, leaving over 7,000 blood and platelet donations uncollected. In Northern Ohio alone, seven blood drives were canceled across Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, resulting in the loss of more than 250 pints of blood.

December 2025 was particularly challenging, with nearly 400 blood drives impacted by extreme weather — more than triple the number affected during the same period last year.

Flu Season and Hospital Demand Add Pressure
The Red Cross says the shortage is being compounded by an active flu season and rising hospital needs. Trauma victims, mothers during childbirth, cancer patients and individuals with sickle cell disease all rely on a stable blood supply, making the current situation especially concerning.

Officials noted particularly critical shortages of platelets and blood types O, A negative and B negative.

Red Cross Urges Immediate Action
“Without immediate action, patients who count on transfusions face serious risk,” the organization said in a statement. Paul Sullivan, senior vice president of Red Cross Donor Services, emphasized that winter is always a difficult season for blood collection — but this year’s weather and illness levels have made it far worse.

Incentives Offered to Boost Donations
To encourage donations, the American Red Cross is offering a $20 e-gift card to donors who give blood between January 26 and February 28, coinciding with National Blood Donor Month.

Those interested can find upcoming blood drives and appointment information on the American Red Cross website.
