Trump Ramps Up Attention on Upcoming Elections, Raising Concerns Ahead of Midterms

A Watchful White House
President Donald Trump is shifting his focus from long-term control of Congress to the immediate voting process in next week’s off-year elections. After months of pushing redistricting efforts and urging GOP-controlled states to redraw congressional maps, Trump’s recent actions signal he may be testing strategies for next year’s midterms — where control of the U.S. House hangs in the balance.

Election Monitoring Sparks Debate
Late last week, the Department of Justice announced federal election monitors would be deployed to one county in New Jersey and five in California. The move is tied to high-stakes contests, including governor races and California’s Proposition 50 — a measure that could shift congressional boundaries and swing seats in Democrats’ favor. The DOJ’s action, taken without consulting local jurisdictions, raised alarms from Democrats who fear the move may preview tactics for 2026.

Trump also criticized California’s election integrity on Truth Social, echoing language used ahead of the 2020 election. California Gov. Gavin Newsom accused the administration of laying groundwork to interfere in future voting.

No Federal Interference Seen at Polls
Despite political tensions, early voting across several states has proceeded without incidents of federal officer involvement. Election experts stress that next Tuesday’s state-based contests — including key Supreme Court retention races in Pennsylvania and mayoral and gubernatorial elections — will be administered securely and without presidential influence.

David Becker of the Center for Election Innovation & Research noted, “Voters … are going to find a very safe and secure process.”

Looking to 2026
With both parties on alert, next week’s off-year contests offer early insight into electoral strategies leading into the 2026 midterms. As nonprofit voting advocate Hannah Fried remarked, “This is about control of Congress… we all have a stake in that.”
