From Anthem to Icon: Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” Hits Double Platinum at CMA Fest 2025

Country music icon Lee Greenwood marked a major milestone during this year’s CMA Music Fest, celebrating the double platinum success of his iconic anthem “God Bless the U.S.A.” amid a whirlwind of events, fan connections, and heartfelt memories that only Nashville in June can deliver.
Though it’s now officially CMA Fest, Greenwood still fondly refers to it by its longtime moniker—Fan Fair—and for good reason. “This is that one time a year where you get to reconnect with those hardcore fans that attend concert after concert and support us artists all year long,” Greenwood said. “It brings back so many fond memories… when they show you photos from 20 or 30 years ago, all of a sudden it takes you right back to that moment in time.”
From playing in the CMA celebrity softball game to surprising fans with an appearance at Kid Rock’s Detroit Cowboy venue, Greenwood’s festival schedule was packed. But the biggest moment of all came during a private dinner, where MCA Records and Universal Music Group presented Greenwood with a plaque commemorating two million sales of the original recording of “God Bless the U.S.A.”—a song that continues to unify and uplift the country more than four decades after its release.
The numbers tell the story of the song’s enduring power. During Memorial Day weekend alone, the track saw a staggering 819% increase in Instagram usage for posts and a 424% jump in video views, reaching over 4.8 million. Greenwood’s career-defining song has long been synonymous with American pride, and this year proved it’s not just a relic of the past—it’s a living, breathing anthem still stirring hearts today.
“I am truly honored and thrilled that ‘God Bless the U.S.A.’ is still having the success that it is having,” Greenwood shared at the event. “I would have never dreamed that 40 years later, from its original release, that I would still be topping the charts with that one song. Dreams really do come true.”
Greenwood also received recognition for a newer twist on the beloved classic. Earlier this year, his rock-infused version of “God Bless the U.S.A.,” recorded with artist Drew Jacobs, topped the Billboard Rock Chart. A second plaque was presented to honor that accomplishment, further cementing the song’s cross-genre relevance.
The success is the latest in a long list of accolades for Greenwood, whose career spans more than four decades, 22 studio albums, and countless honors. From Grammy and CMA Awards to seven No. 1 hits and 38 charting singles, Greenwood has etched his place in American music history. His timeless ballads like “I.O.U.,” “Dixie Road,” and “Somebody’s Gonna Love You” have touched millions—but it’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” that has become the emotional heartbeat of his legacy.
Originally released in 1984, the patriotic ballad became a national rallying cry during pivotal moments in American history, charting in the top five of the country charts three separate times—in 1991 during the Gulf War, in 2001 following 9/11, and again in 2003 during the early days of the Iraq War. It remains the only song across all genres to achieve that feat.
Beyond the charts, Greenwood’s commitment to service and patriotism runs deep. He has been recognized with the National Patriot’s Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and has entertained troops through more than 30 USO tours. In 2024, Helping A Hero honored him at the Grand Ole Opry for his longtime support of America’s military community.
Backstage in Nashville this week, Greenwood reflected not just on his success, but on the connection that’s sustained it. “No other genre of music does this,” he said of the CMA Fest experience, “and it is something very special.”
With another major milestone under his belt and fans spanning multiple generations still singing along, it’s clear that Lee Greenwood’s voice—and message—still resonates powerfully across America. Forty years later, “God Bless the U.S.A.” isn’t just a song. It’s a national treasure.
