New National Report Ranks Michigan Among Top States for Opportunity

Michigan is earning renewed national attention as one of the country’s top states for economic opportunity, according to a new report highlighted this week by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The recognition comes from Business Facilities, which named Michigan to its list of 15 “Opportunity-Rich States” as part of its 2025 State of the Year evaluations.

The designation places Michigan alongside states including Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Texas, and Tennessee — all recognized for programs and results that support business growth, workforce development, and long-term economic competitiveness.

What the ‘Opportunity-Rich’ Ranking Means

The Business Facilities list focuses on states that have demonstrated notable success in creating environments where businesses can grow and communities can thrive. According to the publication, the states selected stood out during a year marked by uncertainty and an evolving site selection landscape.

Editorial Director Anne Cosgrove noted that business leaders and site selectors faced challenges throughout 2025, making the states highlighted particularly notable for offering business-friendly environments supported by strong assets and incentives.

Michigan’s inclusion reflects efforts to position the state as a place where companies can invest with confidence while tapping into a skilled and adaptable workforce.

Building Momentum Through Workforce and Economic Development

The Business Facilities recognition builds on a series of recent national rankings that underscore Michigan’s focus on workforce development and economic competitiveness.

Michigan was ranked No. 4 nationally in Site Selection’s 2026 Workforce Development Rankings and placed second in the East North Central region. The state also moved up two spots from the previous year’s regional rankings, highlighting continued progress in talent development initiatives.

Additional accolades cited include a No. 6 national ranking as a Top State for Business and No. 4 for cost of doing business by CNBC in July 2025 — indicators that Michigan is gaining traction across multiple measures important to employers and investors.

A Strategy Centered on ‘Pure Opportunity’

State officials point to Michigan’s broader economic development strategy as a driving force behind the state’s growing recognition. The “Make It in Michigan” strategy emphasizes workforce development, business attraction, and community investment designed to support both large employers and small businesses.

Quentin L. Messer, Jr., CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, described the ranking as validation of the state’s long-term approach.

“When we say Michigan is the home for Pure Opportunity, it’s more than words,” Messer said. “This latest recognition from Business Facilities proves our efforts to create a business-friendly environment are recognized nationally.”

Messer emphasized the state’s ongoing commitment to helping businesses of all sizes grow while creating employment and entrepreneurial opportunities across Michigan’s communities.

Positioning Michigan for the Future

Governor Whitmer framed the ranking as evidence that Michigan continues to move forward despite broader economic uncertainty. She highlighted the state’s communities, workforce, and quality of life as key factors contributing to its growing reputation.

According to the governor, Michigan’s focus remains on winning new projects, investing in people, and strengthening places where businesses and families can grow.

Taken together, the latest recognition from Business Facilities and other national rankings suggest Michigan is positioning itself as a competitive destination not only for today’s economic landscape, but for long-term growth heading into 2026 and beyond.
