New York Highway Dedicated to Fallen Syracuse Officer Michael E. Jensen

A young life cut short in service to others will now be remembered in a lasting way along a stretch of highway in his hometown.

Governor Kathy Hochul has signed legislation dedicating a portion of State Route 46 in honor of Syracuse Police Officer and Rome native Michael E. Jensen, who was killed in the line of duty last year. The newly designated section runs from Prospect Street in the City of Rome to Dixon Drive in the Town of Western. For the family, friends, and community who knew Officer Jensen best, the highway will stand as a daily reminder of his courage and sacrifice.

Officer Jensen, only 29 years old, lost his life on April 14, 2024, while responding to a dangerous standoff in the town of Salina. That day, law enforcement officers across central New York rushed to the scene of a barricaded suspect. The tense situation tragically ended with the deaths of both Officer Jensen and Lieutenant Michael Hoosock of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office. Their sacrifice sent shockwaves across New York, reminding many of the risks law enforcement officers face every time they put on the uniform.

For Rome, the loss of Officer Jensen was deeply personal. He was not only a public servant but a hometown son whose character and dedication had been visible from an early age. A graduate of Rome Free Academy, Jensen stood out as both a student and athlete, admired by peers for his leadership, discipline, and humility. After high school, he continued his education at Le Moyne College, where he earned a degree in criminology, pursuing a calling that reflected his commitment to service and justice.

The legislation was championed by State Senator Joseph Griffo, R-C-Rome, and Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, D-Marcy. Their bipartisan effort reflected the community’s unity in honoring Jensen’s memory and ensuring that his legacy would be permanently tied to the region that shaped him.

Senator Griffo expressed gratitude for the governor’s support and emphasized the significance of the designation. “I thank the governor for signing this bill into law,” he said. “By dedicating a portion of State Route 46 in honor of Officer Jensen, we are paying tribute to an exceptional individual and dedicated public servant who exemplified the highest ideals of law enforcement. This designation, fittingly located in the community that raised and meant so much to him, will ensure that Officer Jensen’s honorable legacy will endure for generations to come.”

Assemblywoman Buttenschon echoed those sentiments, highlighting not only Jensen’s service but also his personal qualities. “Michael Jensen’s life was a shining example of courage, kindness, and commitment to others,” she said. “He gave so much of himself to protect and serve, and our community is forever better because of him. It is deeply meaningful to know that his name will now live on through this highway, serving as a daily reminder of the sacrifice, love, and strength he brought to everyone around him. I hope this tribute brings his family some comfort, knowing his legacy will never be forgotten.”

The designation will not only be symbolic but also visible. The New York State Department of Transportation will be responsible for installing signage along the designated stretch of Route 46 in the coming months. For those traveling through Rome and Western, the signs will serve as markers of remembrance, ensuring that Officer Jensen’s name and story are carried forward.

Highway dedications have long been a way to honor fallen heroes, from veterans to first responders. For Rome, the placement of Officer Jensen’s memorial on a road that winds through his community is a deeply fitting choice. It ensures that residents and visitors alike will pause, even briefly, to reflect on the life of a man who represented the very best of public service.

The community continues to mourn the loss of Officer Jensen and Lieutenant Hoosock, even as it celebrates their legacies. This tribute along State Route 46 joins other acts of remembrance that keep their sacrifices alive, reinforcing the message that those who give their lives in service to others will never be forgotten.

In the years to come, the stretch of Route 46 bearing Officer Jensen’s name will serve as a bridge between past and future, linking his hometown roots to his enduring example of courage and selflessness. It is a reminder to all that public service comes with great risks, but also with the possibility of inspiring others to live with integrity, compassion, and dedication.

Through this highway designation, the state of New York has ensured that the story of Officer Michael E. Jensen is not just remembered by those who knew him personally but will be carried forward by generations who travel the road he once called home.
