Ricky Skaggs Breathes New Life into Historic Skaggs Place Studio

Country and bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs has announced the official reopening of Skaggs Place Studio, a historic and newly renovated recording space in Hendersonville, Tennessee. The state-of-the-art facility will open its doors to artists and producers on July 16 after undergoing a major transformation designed to fuse vintage charm with cutting-edge recording capabilities.
Originally founded by Skaggs in 1998—after purchasing the building from Duane Allen of The Oak Ridge Boys—the studio has long been a creative haven for some of music’s most iconic names, from Dolly Parton and Peter Frampton to Vince Gill, Travis Tritt, and Alison Krauss. Now, with its new upgrades, Skaggs Place is poised to welcome a new generation of artists seeking world-class production in a peaceful, inspiring setting just outside of Nashville.
“I’m so happy that my newly renovated recording studio Skaggs Place is finally ready to open up again,” said Skaggs. “It was already a studio where many GRAMMY Award-winning projects were recorded, but we’ve done so many things to make it even better.”
Key renovations include raising the ceilings in the main live room to 14 feet for better acoustics and expanded video capabilities, installing new hardwood floors, creating amp lockers for live recording, upgrading lighting and HVAC systems, and enhancing sound isolation with multiple booths and amplifier spaces. A standout feature is the 72-input Amek 9098i console affectionately known as “Dorothy,” surrounded by an extensive array of vintage and modern outboard gear.
The live room, with its distinctive cypress paneling and ambient design, remains a centerpiece of the studio. It’s large enough to accommodate string sessions and live video shoots, while the variety of booths and isolated amp lockers offers flexibility for everything from full band tracking to voiceover and overdub sessions.
Skaggs has also carefully curated the studio’s gear over decades, including rare vintage microphones and tube equipment dating back to his early days in Nashville. The studio supports both Pro Tools and analog 24-track recording, offering versatility for modern and traditional recording techniques.
“There are lots of old vintage photographs of many of my heroes and major influencers in the music industry,” Skaggs added. “Anyone wanting to get away from downtown Nashville will find that Skaggs Place Studio will serve them well. I’m very excited for the future.”
The studio will be managed by longtime Skaggs associate Charlotte Scott, with Sean Badum taking the role of Studio Manager and Engineer.
Located at 329 Rockland Road in Hendersonville, Skaggs Place Studio is now accepting bookings and ready to help create the next generation of musical history.
