A Badge of Courage: DJ Daniel Honored by Virginia Officials

In a heartwarming display of unity and admiration, 13-year-old Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, who is battling brain cancer, was welcomed into Virginia’s law enforcement family on Tuesday during a special swearing-in ceremony attended by Governor Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares.

Surrounded by officers, firefighters, and dignitaries, DJ was officially sworn in as an Honorary State Trooper, Correctional Officer, Probation and Parole Officer, Petersburg Officer, and Henrico County Firefighter. His ceremonial appointments reflect a remarkable journey that has taken DJ and his father, Theodis, across the country. Their goal? To fulfill DJ’s dream of being sworn in by 1,000 law enforcement agencies—a milestone he has far surpassed, now having been honored by more than 1,350 departments nationwide.

Governor Youngkin praised DJ as a beacon of hope, saying, “It is a great honor to welcome DJ Daniel as the newest member of these Virginia law enforcement agencies, including as our newest State Trooper. DJ’s fight represents a symbol of hope and determination for the Commonwealth.”

Attorney General Miyares echoed those sentiments, highlighting DJ’s bravery and resilience: “At just 13-years-old, DJ Daniel has shown more bravery and spirit than most do in a lifetime. As the top law enforcement officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia, it is an immense privilege and honor to welcome DJ into our law enforcement family—one united by a shared calling to protect and serve. Virginia is in your corner, DJ.”

DJ first gained national attention earlier this year when President Donald Trump introduced him before a swearing-in ceremony as an honorary member of the Secret Service. On May 1, he was also appointed an honorary Virginia Sheriff, a recognition that laid the groundwork for Tuesday’s emotional ceremony.

Among those moved by DJ’s story is Frederick County Sheriff Lenny Millholland, who said, “For all that this young man has been through, you have to admire his outlook on life and the love DJ has for law enforcement and those who put on the badge. He is an inspiration to so many. We love him. I am glad we are able to make his dream come true.”
