Frontline Heroes Take the Spotlight at the 2025 Indianapolis 500

As the engines roar and the green flag waves today at the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500, a different kind of hero is being celebrated alongside the drivers: the frontline workers who ensure the community’s safety, health, and well-being.
This year, the City of Indianapolis, in partnership with the nonprofit organization Frontline Builders, has declared May as Frontline Workers Appreciation Month. The initiative aims to honor the dedication and sacrifices of healthcare professionals, first responders, educators, and other essential workers who form the backbone of society.
In the days leading up to the race, Indianapolis’ Chiefs of Police, Fire, and EMS embarked on a citywide initiative dubbed “Pit Stops for Frontline Heroes.” This campaign involved delivering care packages to various frontline institutions, acknowledging the relentless efforts of those who keep the city running smoothly.
These care packages, valued at over $500,000, included food, beverages, and personal care items generously donated by companies such as Harry’s, KIND Snacks, Glossier, Neuro, United Sodas, Nature’s Bakery, Gimme Snacks, and Mavericks Snacks. The donations were coordinated through Frontline Builders, which has been instrumental in supporting frontline workers nationwide since its inception in 2020.
On Race Day, the appreciation continues. Mayor Joe Hogsett, alongside representatives from Frontline Builders, will honor 3,500 frontline workers present at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. These individuals, ranging from medical staff to security personnel, play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and success of the event.
“This month serves as a crucial reminder of just how vital these dedicated heroes are to the fabric of our communities and our country,” said Mayor Hogsett. “Their work is the backbone of a safe, healthy, and thriving society.”
Indianapolis is among more than 250 cities across the United States that have joined the Frontline Builders initiative to declare May as Frontline Workers Appreciation Month. This widespread recognition underscores the importance of acknowledging the contributions of those who often work behind the scenes.
Frontline Builders, founded by KIND Snacks Founder Daniel Lubetzky, has partnered with companies to deliver over 22 million products to more than 1,400 frontline institutions nationwide. The organization’s mission is to ensure that frontline workers feel valued and supported, especially during challenging times.
Frontline workers comprise approximately 70% of the U.S. workforce, providing critical services across healthcare, education, and public safety sectors. Studies have shown that recognizing their contributions leads to higher job satisfaction and strengthens community support.
“Over 90% of Americans interact with frontline workers daily—yet many can’t name or acknowledge them in meaningful ways,” said Jason Lalak, Director of Frontline Builders. “But frontline employees who feel recognized are six times more likely to remain in their positions.”
As the Indianapolis 500 captivates audiences with its high-speed thrills and storied traditions, the inclusion of Frontline Workers Appreciation Month adds a meaningful layer to the event. It serves as a reminder that while the drivers on the track are celebrated for their skill and bravery, countless individuals off the track contribute tirelessly to the safety and well-being of the community.
