Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Honors Martin Luther King Jr. Day with Community Service in North Carolina

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, members of the Theta Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Incorporated, dedicated their holiday to serving the community in North Carolina. The chapter partnered with Religious Community Services, a faith-based nonprofit, to provide meals and support to those in need.

On Monday, January 20, twenty chapter members, joined by six volunteers, prepared and served 96 meals to individuals in the local community. The event was part of the chapter’s ongoing commitment to its mission of service to mankind. In addition to meal preparation, members also assisted in the nonprofit’s warehouse, ensuring additional entrees were ready to help prepare for inclement weather expected the following day.

This service activity was part of the annual AKA Sorority “We Are One Day” initiative, which allows sorority members to commemorate the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through community service. The day is a reminder of King’s commitment to service, and for AKA members, it is a day to give back to the communities they serve.

Founded in 1908 on the campus of Howard University, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the oldest Greek letter organization established by African American college-educated women. Through its mission of service and upliftment, AKA has continued to impact communities across the globe.

The Theta Beta Omega Chapter, which has been serving Craven, Jones, and Pamlico counties since 1964, remains dedicated to fulfilling AKA’s core values by addressing local needs. The Martin Luther King Jr. Day event was part of the chapter’s celebration of National Founders’ Day, with other activities, including a gavel ceremony and worship service at Piney Grove AME Zion Church in Harlowe on January 19.

Through these acts of service, the Theta Beta Omega Chapter continues to honor Dr. King’s legacy, reinforcing their commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
