Bless Your Headlines, America: Double Trouble in Caps and Gowns—New York School Graduates 15 Sets of Twins

Well butter my biscuits and call me a Doppelgänger — Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School is straight-up cloning teenagers, y’all.

Fifteen. That’s right. FIFTEEN sets of twins are graduating from the same New York high school this weekend. Somewhere in the sky, Mary-Kate and Ashley just did a synchronized hair flip out of pure instinct.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Georgia, is it something in the water?” And the answer is probably. Or possibly IVF. Or genetics. Or a full moon over Nassau County nine months before orientation. Either way, this suburban petri dish of double trouble is turning their tassels in tandem — and I, for one, am seeing double and reaching for my readers.

Let me tell you, these aren’t your average matching-overalls, bowl-cut-havin’ sitcom twins. No ma’am. These are fraternal twins — different eggs, different vibes, and in many cases, different genders. And yet, somehow, still showing up to graduation rehearsals looking like they’ve been cast in a limited-edition line of American Girl dolls: The Suburban Honor Roll Collection.

Now bless it, these kids are adorable. They’ve got joint group texts, joint family vacations, and in some cases, joint majors at different colleges. That’s right — some are headed to Ohio State, some to Georgia, and one set’s even going to the same dorm at the University of Florida. Because apparently, nothing says “time to grow up” like decorating your dorm together with matching Gator decals and passive-aggressively labeling your yogurt.

And let’s give it up for the moms, shall we? One twin said, “Deep down, my mom knew it would be easier if we went to the same school.” Easier, indeed. One drop-off, one move-in, one set of tearful Target runs. Efficient parenting at its finest.

But I have to ask: how does a guidance counselor even function in this school? I imagine half their time is spent staring at twins trying to remember who wants to study marine biology and who wants to DJ in Ibiza. God help the attendance office. “Which Herzog twin is out today?” “Derek.” “Which one’s Derek?” “The one who wears the Yankees cap.” “They both do.” “Exactly.”

And the photographers? May we take a moment for the poor yearbook staff. You know they had to designate an entire Google Drive folder just labeled “Twins,” and still someone probably got labeled the wrong sibling in the senior superlatives section. “Most Likely to Succeed: Chase — no wait, Derek. Or was it Braydon? Just list ‘A Herzog.’”

Of course, there were tears — sweet Emma Leibowitz said she “can’t do anything” without her sister Kayla, who’s going to a school 80 miles away. Don’t worry, hon. You’ll still see each other every weekend, and probably FaceTime more than married couples do. But for the ones itching for a little space? Like fashion-forward Sydney and Kayla Jasser going to different fashion programs — well, there’s your next “Project Runway: Sister Edition.”

Now here’s the kicker: this isn’t even new for this school. They had 10 sets of twins in back-to-back years a decade ago, and the incoming freshman class already has nine more sets. At this point, I fully expect the school mascot to just be two eagles joined at the hip.

So what’s the takeaway here? Besides the obvious — that Nassau County needs to stop drinking twin-infused Gatorade — it’s this: Whether you’re a twin, a triplet, or a blessed singleton trying to figure out how to tell your best friend apart from her sister, the truth is, we all want someone who gets us. Someone who’s walked through every awkward hallway, every cafeteria betrayal, and every AP Chem meltdown by our side.

And if you happen to share a womb and a birthday? Well, double the trouble, double the blessings.

So hats off, POBJFK Class of 2025. Whether you’re Emma or Kayla, Chase or Derek, or some unsuspecting soul just trying to figure out which twin is which in the graduation photo — we salute you.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to lie down. All this double vision is making me dizzy.
