A Digital Milestone No One Expected
When Bobby Gruenewald launched the YouVersion Bible App in 2008, he simply wanted a tool that would help him read Scripture more consistently. Seventeen years later, that small idea has become a global movement. Last week, YouVersion officially surpassed one billion installs — a milestone Gruenewald said his team never imagined when they began.
The moment was celebrated at the platform’s “Beyond a Billion” event in Oklahoma City, featuring messages from Gruenewald, Life.Church Senior Pastor Craig Groeschel, and worship from Christian artists including Lauren Daigle, Phil Wickham, and CeCe Winans.
Record Engagement Signals a Spiritual Shift
Even more striking than downloads, Gruenewald said, is the surge in daily Bible engagement. November — typically one of the quietest months of the year — is now seeing all-time highs inside the app. This mirrors what many faith leaders describe as a broader spiritual revival occurring across the U.S. and around the world.
Recent data shows Bible sales jumped 36% in September, with churches reporting increased attendance. Gruenewald believes Gen Z is driving much of the momentum, noting young adults are “more open to the Bible than we ever anticipated,” especially as they search for truth in an age defined by AI and digital skepticism.
A Global, Ad-Free Mission Reaching Every Corner of the World
Part of YouVersion’s impact comes from its accessibility. The app is completely free, carries no ads, and doesn’t monetize user data. Supported by donors, ministries, publishers, and thousands of volunteers, YouVersion now offers Scripture in more than 3,600 versions and over 2,300 languages.
With installs up 12% globally and daily engagement up 18% in the past year, Gruenewald believes this is only the beginning. After hitting one billion downloads, he says the next billion could come within five years.
