Why Seniors Are Taking Over Social Media — And It’s Actually Good for Their Health

Older adults are fast becoming some of the most active users of social media, and it’s doing more than just helping them keep in touch—it’s boosting their mental health. A recent international study found that seniors who regularly use platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp experience reduced loneliness, rekindled friendships, and a greater sense of purpose. In Australia alone, over 70% of those aged 65 and older are active online. For many, social media offers a virtual seat at the family table—helping them stay close to grandchildren, connect over shared hobbies, and even find their voice as “grandfluencers.” While challenges like privacy concerns and tech anxiety persist, initiatives that improve digital literacy could help unlock the full benefits of online connection for older generations.
