Steak ’n Shake Announces Bitcoin Bonus for Hourly Workers

Steak ’n Shake is drawing national attention after announcing a new compensation initiative that includes a 21-cent-per-hour bitcoin bonus for all hourly employees.

The company shared the news in a post on X, stating that beginning March 1, hourly workers would earn the cryptocurrency bonus as part of its effort to become what it called a “Maximum-Wage Employer” in its communities.

“We look to pay the best to obtain the best so we can give the best,” the company wrote, adding that caring for employees ultimately benefits customers.

Additional Pledge Tied to Trump Accounts Program

The chain also pledged a $1,000 contribution to the Trump Accounts program set to launch July 4. The program, established under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, will provide $1,000 to every American child born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028.

The announcement positions Steak ’n Shake at the intersection of business, politics and cryptocurrency — a combination that quickly ignited online debate.

Online Reactions: Praise and Pushback

Supporters on social media applauded the move, calling it innovative and employee-focused.

Others were less impressed, arguing that the 21-cent hourly bonus amounts to only a modest weekly increase and labeling the move more symbolic than substantial.

The bitcoin incentive is the latest in a series of high-profile changes at the restaurant chain. In recent months, Steak ’n Shake has removed microwaves from its kitchens in favor of more traditional cooking methods and installed large American flags at various locations.

Whether viewed as bold innovation or savvy marketing, the bitcoin bonus has ensured one thing: people are talking.
