Roblox Rolls Out Facial Age Checks to Curb Predator Concerns

Roblox is expanding its use of facial age estimation technology across its platform in an effort to strengthen child safety, pairing the system with verified IDs and parental consent to provide a more accurate measure of users’ ages than self-reported birthdays. The company also plans to restrict communication between adults and minors unless they know each other in real life, a move that comes amid mounting pressure from lawmakers and regulators who argue Roblox has not done enough to protect young players from predators. Louisiana recently filed suit over the platform’s safety protocols, and other officials, including Rep. Ro Khanna, have called for tougher protections. Roblox says these new measures will ensure players access only age-appropriate features and content, while setting a standard it hopes other gaming and social media platforms will follow.
