Largest Male Great White Shark Spotted Back in Florida Waters

A Giant Returns to Familiar Waters
The Atlantic’s largest recorded male great white shark has made a dramatic return to Florida waters after an extraordinary year-long journey across the ocean. The 14-foot, 1,700-pound shark, known as Contender, was first tagged off the Florida-Georgia coast in January 2025 and has since traveled thousands of miles across international waters.
Researchers confirmed that Contender recently resurfaced near Florida, completing one of the longest documented migrations of a great white shark in the Atlantic Ocean.
Tracking an Unprecedented Migration
Over the past year, satellite data showed Contender moving north along the U.S. East Coast, passing New Jersey and Massachusetts before reaching the Gulf of St. Lawrence in eastern Canada. He was also recorded near Cape Hatteras and the waters off Nantucket during the summer months.
OCEARCH, the marine research organization tracking Contender, uses satellite tagging technology to follow shark movements in real time. The tag attached to Contender is expected to transmit data for up to five years, offering scientists a rare window into great white behavior.
Why Scientists Are Watching Closely
Researchers believe Contender’s return to Florida may be tied to the species’ mysterious mating patterns. According to OCEARCH founder Chris Fischer, late winter and early spring appear to be critical periods for understanding great white reproduction — an area still largely unknown to science.
Scientists will be monitoring whether Contender encounters other mature male or female great whites in the region, which could provide valuable clues about breeding behavior.
A Living Clue to Ocean Mysteries
Beyond the spectacle, Contender’s journey highlights how much remains unknown about the ocean’s top predators. Each movement recorded helps researchers better understand migration routes, mating behavior, and the health of marine ecosystems — reminding us just how vast and interconnected the Atlantic truly is.
